Highlights from Spring Break ‘08

Sushi. Coincidental run-ins. Couture. Stripper-Prom shoes. Plumbing problems. Office visits. Headin to the tropics. Cheese platters. Celebrity encounters – Seal, Heidi & Brad Garrett. More cheese platters. VIP. Ledge dancing. Fire breathing. Rock of love. Love notes for the DJ. New & old friends. Faceplant. Laughing for 15 minutes straight. Wedding chit chat. Organic eats. Executive chef Jamie. Tablescape. Ellinis. Realizing maybe I was the fat kid. Mini cupcakes. Getting our hair did. Scary dioramas. Going green. More laughs. Opinionated waiters. French press coffee.

It was so nice to see my girls (sans Stac :( – she was greatly missed) and as always they were fabulous hostesses.  I tried to post a pic that I feel really sums up the whole weekend, but unfortunately my parents computer isn’t cooperating. I am spending the rest of the week relaxing with the parents, eating everything in sight, meeting my old babysitting kiddos for ice cream and if we can get some appts. start wedding dress shopping for some ideas – so excited!

7 days, 2 hours and 55 minutes

I am getting so excited to see my friends and fam in 7 short days! I recently decided to take advantage of my time off and take a trip home for a while.  I figured I might not have this opportunity again anything soon.  So I booked my flight and I’m heading home for a full week of funtivities (i.e. cheese, wine, birthday party, cajun food and wedding planning).  I would say my Dad is just a bit excited, as he has emailed me almost everyday about the trip since I booked it.  Unfortunately, Stacy Five Cents will only be there in spirit and will be really missed.  It will be the first time I get to see Em in a year and half – WAY too long! I decided to post this pick of last summer’s girls weekend in hopes that the next will be just as fabulous. Let the countdown begin!

Prom 2008

Last Friday, I learned over dinner with some friends that Brian and I will be attending his work’s Black & White Ball (A.K.A. Prom ‘08) in a few short weeks.   Its black tie and of course I have to wear a black or white formal dress. Thank God we went to dinner with them because Brian neglected to mention anything about this to me. (I later explained to him the importance of prior notice especially for work events that require formal dress shopping.)  I wish I could get one of J.Crew’s little black dresses, but its not in the budget.  So now I have a predicament on my hands….I have to find a dress that I can borrow from a friend or buy something that needs to look expensive, but costs me pennies.  Please send any suggestions my way.  I am going to run to the mall this week and check out the prom sale selections and F21 couture.  If I don’t find anything, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that I can get something with my girls next week in KC.  I came across this pic while doing some online research – it gave me few laughs – eeeek! Wish me luck.

Hmmm…

Yesterday I spent a beautiful sunny afternoon in the city.  I ended up parking kind of far away from my destination because I found flat rate parking for $5 - cheap!  On my long walk to H&M I went through a few blocks that I now know tend to inhabit a lot of homeless.  So I was briskly walking along when I swore I heard this homeless women a 1/2 block back in a raspy voice yell, “Lauren, Lauren!” I slowed down for a second trying to register what she was saying.  Was she really calling for me or was she yelling at one of her friends?  Based on the stats in the book Freakonomics (see Chapter 6), its unlikely her friend’s name was Lauren.  I then thought maybe I’d dropped something with my name on it and she was yelling for me to come back and pick it up? I quickly shuffled through my purse and didn’t see anything missing.  So instead of stopping and trying to figure it out and potentially getting pulled into a conversation that I didn’t really want to have, I kept walking.  After another block I started to realize, maybe this was like a movie where a random person comes up to you and knows who you are although you’ve never seen them before and says something cryptic that with time will either make complete sense or will help you solve a puzzle and get you out of some high pressure situation.  I guess I’ll never know if that was a crazy coincidence or if she was there to deliver a message.  I can only hope that I don’t have any high pressure situations that I need to decipher in the near future.

Crafternoon

I made these cards for my girls and an old coworker (all dog lovers) during B and my craft day a couple weekends ago.  We felt the need to exercise our brains in some other way instead of laying in front of the lifeforce.  They were so easy and fun!  My next project is to do the doggy silhouettes with cute patterned fabric on t-shirts.  Although I will need access to a sewing machine.  By the way, Brian’s project was taking some pics at the train station that night.  Here’s one of my favorites.

Awakening

I realize this promo video is a bit cheesy, but I do think it gets the overall message across. I admit that due to the increased amount of daytime television I am watching lately, I’ve recently fell into Oprah Book Club trap (which I thought I would never do).  Believe it or not, I am so happy that I did.  I’m actually so excited by it, that I feel the need to share.  I recently started reading this book by Eckhart Tolle and its already changing my perspective.  I also downloaded the supplemental podcasts and listen to each after I read a chapter.  Its not tied to any religion, its about spiritual awakening.  I promise that if you are ready for it, you will be just as excited as I am.  So I encourage you to look past the fact that its part of the book club and grab a copy.  If you arent interested now, keep it and open it up again 6 months, 8 months or even a year from now.  It really is incredible.

The Culmination of Summer

sf-music-festival.jpg

I could give you laundry list of reasons why I love San Francisco (one of which includes the fact that they were the first city to ban plastic grocery bags- love it).  Even before I moved to the area I proclaimed it the “best city in the U.S.” One could spend a lazy afternoon at the SFMOMA as B and I did last Sunday after a delicious brunch or you could spend three days at the best music festival in Golden Gate park. Yesterday I  discovered what I’ve decided will be the culmination of my Summer 2008 – The San Fran Outside Land’s Music & Art Festival.  The lineup is fantastic and I can already see myself laying in the park on a warm August day with the grass between my toes rocking out to Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and Radiohead.  I HAVE to get tickets…but there’s one problem.  The three-day ticket price is a steep $225 bucks  (can you believe that?!?) and they haven’t started selling the one day tickets yet.  Considering my current profession is a stay-at-home fiance, its not looking like it’ll fit into my budget.  So I’m staying optimistic and keeping my fingers crossed on the job and the tickets….
