A Different Breed

races-3.jpg

So I spent Easter Sunday doing the one thing that I probably shouldn’t…gambling at the horse races.  Maybe that is why we didn’t win anything.  Regardless, it was a really exciting experience with GREAT people watching.  In my mind, I’ve always envisioned the horse races to be filled with big hats, sundresses, cocktails, people with English accents and big money.  Unfortunately, my experience on a beautiful Sunday afternoon was none of these things.  When Brian, his Dad and I decided we would spend the afternoon at the track, I immediately grabbed my green sundress from my closet (one that I have been waiting for the perfect Spring moment to unveil).   I have several friends that make the trek to the Kentucky Derby every year and that’s all I could think about.  As I watched Brian and his Dad walk out in t-shirts and jeans I thought I might be a tad overdressed and with some disappointment opted for a tank and jeans instead.  As we entered the track, I started to realize that more people were wearing holey jeans then seersucker pants and no mint juleps were in sight.  As we strategically picked our seats (in the sun, with full view of the board) Brian’s Dad quickly warned me to watch out for the creepy old men.  Strange, I dont recall creepy old men in the horse racing scene from Pretty Woman. After a few trips to the concession stand, I soon realized that Bay Meadows was no Kentucky Derby, but it was just as entertaining. As a first timer, I learned that studying the stats and number crunching or my method of choosing the horses based on their names is never a guarantee; there is no need to bring a book to pass the time between the races, the people watching is just as entertaining; and there are no British accents or sundresses or mint juleps…mainly just a bunch of drunk old men.  Although it wasnt a day at the Royal Ascot, it was really fun to experience something new.  I wish I could say I won big money, but my $3.40 win was enough for me.

Paper Passion

flower.jpg

I’ve been meaning to post this pic to showcase the wonderful talent of my crafty paper  pal Joj (A.K.A. Va Va Va Bloom- quite appropriate) .  I received this fabulous handmade flower and card for my birthday a couple weeks ago and just love it.  We’ve always shared a mutual love for paper.  I look forward to receiving her creative birthday and Christmas cards every year.  So thanks again Joj for brightening my day with another one of your crafty creations!

Infestation

 Finely & I pre-tick Infestation

On Sunday Brian and I decided to take the Finster for a long hike.  We got a bit of a late start but I suited up in my hiking gear (which thank God I had…more on that later) and we headed out.  We were luckily able to find a great spot in Portola which is this beautiful area surrounded in Redwoods – gorgeous.  Finley had the time of her life.  She was like a gazelle leaping through the grass.  Little did I know what was to come.  After the hike, we all piled into the car and headed home.  I turned around and noticed several black spots on Finley’s forehead that I assumed was mud.  When I looked a little closer, I realized her head was covered in TICKS!  So I ask this – what are these disease carrying creatures contributing?  Yes, I know logically they are part of the food chain in some way, but come on. I dislike these things just as much or maybe even more then a praying mantis.  So after an hour with the tweezers and a flea/tick bath the final Finley count = 26, Brian & Lauren = 0.  Thank goodness for my hiking gear.

My Little Ray of Sunshine

mixer3.jpg

Oh, how something so small can change your life so quickly.  No, I’m not talking about a baby.  After years of drooling over them at bridal showers, on TV and in my mother’s kitchen – I finally got one for my Christmas/birthday present….a yellow KitchenAid mixer.  For those of you non-bakers who do not understand the obsession.  Let me explain.  This thing is a chameleon. With the right attachments, it can be a can opener, food grinder, food tray, fruit/veggie strainer, grain mill, citrus juicer, slicer, sausage stuffer (which I will not use), ravioli maker, pasta roller and best of all ice cream maker.  Its also helped me win over the hearts of our neighbors and Brian’s coworkers with my newest cupcake concoction.  Who knew?

Peer Pressure

I’ve finally succumb to peer pressure and started a blog.  From what I’ve been told, all the cool kids are doing it.  It’s not near as intimidating as I originally thought and I’m actually quite excited about it.  So here goes my sweet look at life through marigold colored glasses.
